Cattle sold to better-than-anticipated rates at Pakenham today across an offering of more than 1700 cattle. See the prices here.

The hammer falls at Pakenham sale

Restockers and feedlots competed at the Pakenham market to push prices $100 dearer than initially anticipated.

A total of 1730 cattle went under the hammer, and Elders Pakenham livestock manager Denis Linley said overall, it was a good result.

“We were happy with the sale today; the main lines of spring-drop weaners sold a little bit above our expectations,” he said.

“Some steers were up to $100 better than expected.”

In keeping with other recent sales, the market was more difficult for the lighter lines and some of the heifers.

“With everything considered, it was a good result,” he said.

There was a feedlot operator helping to push prices along for the top-end cattle, and restockers from throughout the Gippsland showed support after the recent rain.

Mr Delaney said the region had received around 30mm to 40mm of rain in the past week.

HD Middleton from Trafalgar sold 10 Angus steers, 9 to 10 months, 372kg to return $1490 or 400c/kg.

Watermill Pastoral at Red Hill offered 14 Angus steers, 9 to 10 months, weighing 394kg for $1480 and 375c/kg.

The same vendor sold 15 Angus steers weighing 336kg for $1250 or 372c/kg.

Vendors Rob Clements from Cremona Park at Caldermeade sold 16 Angus steers, 9 to 10 months, weighing 345kg for $1280 or 371c/kg.

Another line of cattle from Cremorna Park, 15 Angus steers, 298kg, made $1100, equating to 369c/kg and 18 steers, 276kg, made $1010 or 365c/kg.

In the heifer section, Cremorna Park offered 14 Angus heifers weighing 323kg and they made $970. The same vendor offered 16 Angus heifers weighing 290kg to make $920.
