Melbourne Royal Show: Limousins named feature breed
Exhibitors are preparing their best Limousin cattle to compete in the feature breed section at Melbourne Royal Show.
A classy heifer from Uranquinty in southern NSW will be in the mix when Limousin cattle take centre stage at Melbourne Royal Show.
Limousins have been selected as the feature breed in the beef cattle section, and exhibitors say it’s an exciting time to be showing cattle.
Relative newcomer Nicholas Byrne-Quinn started his Shaw’s Livestock stud after participating in a school show team with Oakhill College in Sydney.
He will make his first trip to Melbourne Royal Show in September and expects to witness some good competition.
His heifer, Summit Magic T44, is currently 11 months old, and he said the coming months would be spent washing, clipping and feeding in preparation for the big event.
He said the fact Limousins were the feature breed was a drawcard and he might not have ventured south otherwise.
Summit Magic T44 recently had an outing after participating in Canberra’s Limousin Junior Heifer Show from July 6 to 9.
“She was fourth in her class there, and it was a very tough class,” Nicholas said.
“She has a bit of growing to do, and I think we will get her there by Melbourne.”
Organisers expect about 500 exhibits representing the various breeds in the beef cattle judging at Melbourne Royal Show.
To coincide with the announcement of the feature breed, Limousin cattle are also celebrating 50 years in Australia and New Zealand.
The show will run from Thursday, September 21 to Sunday, October 1, with the cattle interbreed competition on Saturday, September 30.
