Injemira: Poll Hereford breeders add Angus sale

Major southern NSW Poll Hereford stud Injemira is to hold its inaugural Angus bull sale. Here’s why they’ve added the breed.

Injemira Beef Genetics will hold its first on-property Angus bull sale next week.

Renowned for breeding Poll Herefords — something that will continue — Injemira stud principal Marc Greening said producing Angus bulls was a way to expand his business.

Marc said he saw a gap in the market for breeding Angus bulls with a strong emphasis on structure and carcass yield.

“There’s an overwhelming problem in the industry around longevity of bulls and something we are really focused on in the Angus bulls is structural soundness and longevity,” Marc said.

“We are breeding a similar type Angus bull to our Herefords, only difference is the different colour coat.”

“We’ve been breeding Angus bulls for about eight years and selling them privately, and it was time last year to have an on-property sale, but with Covid I got jumpy and we just sold privately then,” he said.

“With openness and who gets to have the first choice of bulls, having an on-property sale is now the way forward.”

Injemira will continue to have its Poll Hereford bull sale in autumn with about 100 bulls on offer, and selling 140 to 150 Poll Herefords a year total, but will now add the spring Angus bull sale.

“We are not getting out of Herefords, this is an add on.”

The Angus bull sale will be held on-property at Book Book, via Wagga Wagga, NSW, next Tuesday, August 24, with 39 bulls on offer.

Marc said due to Covid-19 restrictions and no Victorians being allowed across the border without quarantine the sale would run simultaneously on AuctionsPlus, where there is also extensive bull videos.

“Some of our bigger Hereford clients were buying Angus bulls for black baldy programs and they asked me to help buy their Angus bulls one year. After the sale and a beer I decided maybe I’d breed them,” Marc said.

And like they do with the Poll Herefords, Injemira plans to buy back the weaner calves for grass-fed markets.
