Injemira Beef Genetics: Hereford bulls top at $75,000
Hereford bull buyers shelled out a high of $75,000 at the Injemira Beef Genetics on-property sale. See who was in the crowd.
Savvy bull buyers Grace and Emily Elsom were prepared to enter into a competitive bidding match to secure the top-priced bull for $75,000 at the Injemira Beef Genetics sale on Tuesday.
A total of 85 bulls from 90 offered sold for an average of $11,929, with many of the purchasers being repeat buyers.
The 53rd annual production sale hosted by the Greening family at Injemira in southern NSW attracted buyers from across Australia and overseas.
A highlight was the sale of Injemira Patriarch T340 (PP), which captured the interest of the Elsom family from the Emigrace Poll Hereford Stud at Macarthur.
They were impressed with the son of Bowen Patriarch P017 (AI) (ET) (PP) from Injemira Happy Day J042 (P).
A combination of genetics, the paternal line of Patriarch, and some stellar figures made them confident to push the bidding high on the 724kg bull.
He boasted figures of +7.1 eye muscle area, +1.1 rib and +2.1 rump.
The sisters said he was their favourite in the catalogue, and they didn’t see him in the flesh until the morning of the sale.
“He was good on the figures, and it was good to actually see him today,” Grace said.
Auctioneer Paul Dooley took the bids, and buyers were not perturbed by the recent ups and downs of the beef industry at a saleyard level and continued to seek high-performing genetics.
Stud principal Marc Greening said he was pleased with the overall result, especially the average. He was also humbled to see so many repeat buyers at the sale.
Mr Greening said buyers were seeking early-maturing genetics that would finish off on grass.
There was demand for bulls that had low birth weight and low gestation length and were suitable for heifers.
“Bulls with phenotype and solid data were sought,” he said.
The Patriarch bloodline also garnered the interest of buyers.
“Robert Redford (genetics) sold well too, he was our top-priced bull for $160,000 in 2021,” Mr Greening said.
“I am extremely happy with the result; it was a good outcome, and people (operating within) all budgets were able to bid on a large selection of bulls,” he said.
Volume purchasers and cousins John and Andrew Turvey journeyed from Willinga Pastoral Co. at Wandoan in Queensland to seek out bulls for their commercial operation. They join Herefords and Santa Gertrudis females to Injemira bulls.
They secured 18 bulls to a top of $40,000 and an average of $13,600.
Meanwhile, Omeo weaner cattle specialists and repeat buyers of Injemira genetics, Simon and Sonya Lawlor bought two sires to a top of $11,000. They run 400 commercial females.
