Dumped Wagga Wagga sheep remain unclaimed

Police are continuing to investigate the mystery of 56 unidentified sheep dropped at a southern NSW saleyard last year.

The rightful owner still has not been found for a mob of sheep that mysteriously showed up at a selling complex in southern NSW, police have confirmed.

The 56 unmarked and unidentified sheep were left at the Wagga Wagga Livestock Marketing Centre in October last year in a mystery that has raised more questions than answers.

Police have appealed to the public for information. But an owner is yet to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector and co-ordinator of the NSW rural crime prevention team Cameron Whiteside said on Thursday that the stock had been impounded through the Wagga Wagga City Council because no owner had been identified.

“Whilst they can’t be linked to a current investigation, they relate to an investigation in their own right,” Inspector Whiteside said.

“We are still keen to establish the origin of the stock if there is anyone that might be able to shed light,” he said.

Police would not reveal the description, including age, breed and sex, because it could lead to someone trying to identify the mob and claim them as their own.

“We don’t want to run the risk of someone, who isn’t the owner, being able to identify them,” he said.

Inspector Whiteside said the sheep had never been tagged. He said leaving sheep untagged at sale yards was highly unusual and illegal.

He said it meant the sheep had been transported there illegally.

Inspector Whiteside also confirmed there was no CCTV footage of any truck movements to help identify the transport.

Police suspect the dumping of the sheep is suspicious.

Inspector Whiteside has urged the public to come forward with information or make anonymous reports through Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

Anyone with information can also contact Detective Senior Constable Ned Doubleday at Wagga Wagga Police on 0429 596 435.
