What is hyperdecanting? The wine hack that makes $10 wine taste 'expensive'

Hear me out (then get your blender ready).

Want expensive wine but don’t have the budget for it? Buy a $10 bottle of wine and pour it into the blender. I know it sounds strange… but hear me out.

I was recently scrolling through TikTok, when a video of a woman blending her wine stopped me in my tracks. I immediately had one pressing question. Why?!

After some digging – reading articles and watching copious amounts of TikToks – the answer was revealed to me: hyperdecanting.

What is hyperdecanting?

Hyperdecanting is basically just a fancy way of saying putting wine in a blender, with the end goal of improving the taste.

Blending wine is thought to aerate and accelerate the ageing process, making it taste more ‘expensive’.

When looking at the description of pricey bottles of wine, you’ll see a lot of terms being thrown around, like “aged” and “long term cellaring”, but blending cheap wine is thought to trick you into thinking you’re tasting the good stuff.

As someone who loves a bargain, I had to test out this theory and see if I could save some money next time I have friends over for dinner… and I enlisted my taste.com.au colleagues to help.

We tried the blender wine hack: our verdict

To kick off the taste test, three of us initially tried the unblended wine poured straight from the bottle, and then tried the wine after it had been blended for about 30 seconds.

Here’s what the team thought after trying the blended wine.

Marina: “It’s way easier to drink. Much lighter. I like it.”

Xenia: “It’s fruity, soft. There’s a little bit of a tang to it.”

Bella: “It kind of tastes the same. I’m not really sensing too much of a difference.”

Overall, it’s not a foolproof way to improve the taste of wine, but the fact that two out three of us could taste a difference shows that it’s still definitely worth at least trying this hack with a budget bottle.

Wine Hack

The best wine hack we’ve tried

Because one wine hack is never enough, we also recently tried out the viral creamy sangria trick, to see what all the fuss was about.

If you haven’t heard of it, it involves adding ice-cream to red wine – like an old-school float – to make it creamy. Our Food Editor (and cocktail expert) Elisa Pietrantonio gave it a go, adding canned fruit and vanilla ice-cream to basic red wine.

Elisa’s verdict? She was “shooketh to the core” at how delicious it was. We’ll all be drinking creamy sangria from now on.
