We ranked the most polarising Aussie lollies and it's controversial
Yep, we went there.
“This is the best meat pie in Australia.”
“What do you mean you don’t like Vegemite?”
“Let’s have a choccy bikkie!”
“It’s my mum’s famous cob loaf recipe.”
But some conversations can get pretty heated… like talking about the nation’s more controversial foods. Some of our recent Facebook polls have demonstrated how passionate Aussies feel about their lollies. We know which ones everyone loves (hello, Red Frogs), but there are many more polarising ones out there.
So here’s our ranking of all the most talked-about Australian lollies, from best to not-quite-so-best.
Milk bottles
Those who like milk bottles absolutely LOVE milk bottles. Those who don’t really need to try our milk bottle slice, complete with a buttery biscuit base and sour cream topping.
Clinkers
We’re not sure if people forgot about Clinkers or if they just got sick of arguing about whether there really were more pink ones in a packet (we settled that debate here btw), but Clinkers definitely dropped off the Aussie lolly radar for a while there. However, largely thanks to our viral Clinkers cheesecake slice, these little pastel pretties are making an almighty comeback. We love them!
Bullets
Licorice has always been a love it or hate it thing – but when it’s covered with chocolate, it’s pretty delicious in our book.
Teeth
Many people would say these are their absolute faves but we’ve all had that moment when we’ve been a bit grossed out by a bit of tooth-on-tooth action.
Warheads
When we were younger, we thought it was clever to see how many Warheads we could fit into our mouth at once. Embarrassing drooling, sore jaws and unbearable sourness ensued, which is probably why they made it onto this list.
Bananas
We loved these as kids, but now we’re not so sure about that fake banana flavour and weird foamy texture…
Musk sticks
Many people compare musk sticks to soap, but they have a hardcore fan base. Our new Musk sticks margarita video recently got a whopping 6K comments and 1.6K likes on Facebook, so it’s pretty safe to say these are more loved than people realise.
Yellow mentos
Pink – delicious. Purple, yes please. Yellow – meh, not so much.
Spearmint leaves
When we recently asked our Facebook followers to share their most-hated Aussie lolly, an overwhelming number of you chose Spearmint leaves. However, when they made a reappearance on supermarket shelves after being discontinued, Aussies were surprisingly euphoric – perhaps just because you needed them to decorate your rocky road?
Licorice Allsorts
If we can’t have licorice covered in chocolate, we’ll have it layered with sweet, brightly coloured confectionery. These aren’t for everyone, but our Licorice Allsort slice has been known to convert even the most passionate Allsort hater.
Turkish Delight
Described by two of our users as “floury on the outside, floral on the inside” and “jelly’s bad cousin”, we of course appreciate that many people don’t like Turkish Delight. But… have you tried this slice?
Aniseed jelly beans
We posted a ‘yes or no’ poll about the black jelly beans earlier this year, expecting most people to express their distaste for the alleged unpopular flavour. Although 1.1k people said nay to the black ones, an overwhelming 3.1K people said yay! (One even called them their “absolute fav”, which we find really hard to believe while red ones are around.)
Black Cats
Always the first to come up in a convo about least favourite lollies, poor old Black Cats are definitely the underdog (undercat?) of the confectionery world. To those who love them: #sorrynotsorry.
