We made the ‘Moist Maker’ sandwich from Friends... in a PIE MAKER

Turn off the TV, because our very own food director Michelle Southan has made an 8-minute, 5-ingredient pie maker version of the leftovers sandwich made famous by Monica and Ross in Friends.

Over the last few years, Friends has made a huge comeback. There’s even a book featuring all the recipes from the TV show (yes, including Rachel’s questionable mince ‘trifle’), which made us think of one of the other most memorable dishes of all time from the series: the Moist Maker sandwich.

What is the Friends’ Moist Maker Sandwich?

In Season 5 Episode 9 of the show, Monica makes a special treat for her brother after their Thanksgiving feast. Ross explains: “My sister makes these amazing turkey sandwiches. Her secret is, she puts an extra slice of gravy-soaked bread in the middle; I call it the Moist Maker.”

As the disappearance of the sandwich from his work fridge causes Ross to scream at his boss and then lose his job, we figured it must be pretty delicious… so we enlisted the help of the experts.

Our version of Monica’s Moist Maker recipe

Taste.com.au’s food director Michelle Southan has been given some cooking challenges in her time, but she jumped at the chance to give this one a shot.

And just to make it extra special, she only went and made it in a PIE MAKER. The pie maker was huge back in 2019 but has been shunted aside to make way for the air fryer obsession. But it seems in winter 2024, it’s making another comeback.

As one of our most notorious appliance experts, Michelle has been pretty excited at the resurgence of the pie maker and got to work making her pie maker moist maker right away.

So what’s the secret to the success of the dish, according to her? Michelle explains: “Gravy-soaked bread makes the perfect gooey-on-the-inside, crispy-on-the-outside pie.”

How to make a pie maker Moist Maker sandwich

All you need is bread, a hot chook (or leftovers from your own roast chicken), instant gravy (who doesn’t have that in the pantry already?), eggs and mustard. Michelle says “You can substitute the mustard for cranberry jelly if you prefer, which gives it a Christmassy vibe.”

It might sound questionable, but you begin by whisking your eggs with some of the pre-made gravy. Cut your bread into rounds using the pie maker cutter and dunk one into the gravy mixture before popping straight into the hot pie maker. Top with roast chicken, gravy and mustard and another gravy-and-egg-soaked bread circle, close and cook until crispy.

The finished result is a golden pie that Monica and Ross would be proud of.
