The surprising Aussie snack feeding hundreds of athletes at Paris Olympics
Because even Olympians need their comfort food fix.
Take a peek inside the pantry in the Australian section of the Olympic Village and you’ll find mile-high stacks of meat pies supplied by Four’N’Twenty, dubbed the “Official Pie of Team Australia” .
Aussie pies: the ultimate Olympic treat
It’s safe to assume that, going off the sheer quantity of the volume of pies consumed, meat pies are a hit with Aussie athletes.
A spokesperson for the Olympics confirmed this, saying you can find the athletes chowing down on them as a post competition celebratory snack, or just as an all-round anyday, any time staple.
Sergei Evglevski, an Olympic Shooter competing in the Paris Olympics, has documented his prep for the Olympics via social media, and of course, a pie was involved.
“Training plus pie equals performance,” he said.
BRB, going to try eating a meat pie before my next workout.
What do Olympians eat for breakfast?
Move over croissants, Aussie athletes aren’t seeking out a traditional French breakfast. Instead, they’re eating cereal sent over from Australia. Exactly 1.4 tonnes of it.
Although we know the hefty weight of cereal that’s been exported, our Olympic food spies didn’t manage to find out exactly what type of cereal is a hit in the village. Weet-Bix and Nutri-Grain? Surely. But we reckon there might be a few athletes who can’t go without a bowl of Coco Pops in the morning.
Aside from meat pies, Olympians need other sources of fuel, of course – and we’ve been told that the pantry is well stocked.
What do Olympic athletes eat?
Here’s what else you’ll find in the pantry in the Aussie section at the Olympics:
- Coffee beans for 20,000 shots of coffee
- 9,700 slushies will be made
- 10,000 muesli bars
- 30kg Old El Paso salsa (used for Taco Tuesdays across Team sites)
- 3,200kg tuna and 340kg rice expected to be consumed
That’s a lot of food for the people who we hope will bring home a lot of medals.
