I’m yet to find another plant food that satisfies my snack cravings as good as the avocado. In fact, I’m so loyal to this fruit that my breakfast every single day always centres around a big dollop of guac. Anyone else?

But, as much as I have always claimed to be a guac guru in this world, I recently discovered a new secret to creamy guac…

Natural yoghurt.

How to make the best guacamole: just add natural yoghurt

Yes, natural yoghurt is key for whipping up the creamiest guacamole you’ve ever had. Whilst lime juice is non-negotiable, the creaminess of the yoghurt helps balance the zestiness and makes the guac extra fluffy. Consistency is key, so next time Mexican is on the menu (or you have a few friends coming over), try this recipe by taste.com.au Food Director Michelle Southan.

Michelle says of this recipe:

“It was only a few years back I was enjoying a guacamole at a barbie and it was so creamy. I soon discovered they added yoghurt instead of lemon or lime juice. Since then I always add plain Greek yoghurt. It adds creaminess and at the same time that citrus tang. This is also perfect as we always have yoghurt on hand in the fridge and not always sour cream.”

Tip for storing this homemade guacamole

When preparing a large serving of Michelle’s yoghurt guacamole recipe for my lucky guests, my worst nightmare is leftover brown mush, so I now turn to this freezing trick (gasp!) That’s right – this guacamole is not only super-fluffy but freezer-friendly too. Up until now, I never considered my freezer to be guac’s saving grace.

Since discovering Michelle’s recipe, my freezer is straight to the rescue of my guac every week. (Side note: I now also make sure I always have some form of chips at the ready for instant dipping.)

Mexican Monday or Taco Tuesday – your (extra creamy) guac is here for it.

The best way to prepare avocados for this guacamole

As much as I might cave and keep adding unripe avos to my cart in hope they’ll soften, there always comes a time when your avo is good to go. Check out our quick guide on how to best prepare your avos (on a good day).
