There’s nothing handier than a can of tuna. Not only is it full of protein and omega-3 oils, but it’s incredibly versatile.

There’s nothing handier than a can of tuna. Not only is it full of protein and omega-3 oils, but it’s incredibly versatile.

On taste.com.au we’ve got hundreds of recipes that utilise a humble can of tuna – our easy tuna bento balls are perfect for lunchboxes, tuna nachos are our fresh take on regular nachos and this tuna and herb risoni salad is a great option for a light summer dinner.

But the one tuna dish that we swear by has to be tuna mornay.

Rich in protein and low in fat, canned tuna is a healthy lunch or dinner option.

This creamy tuna pasta bake has been a staple in Aussies’ diets for decades for a good reason – it’s oh-so-good and oh-so-budget-friendly!

Food writer Alison Adams tells us how tuna mornay was a staple in her diet as a uni student. She writes: “Every share house I lived in had it on regular rotation. It had everything a student needed; it was cheap, easy to cook, had no vegetables (we were living out of home, why would we eat vegetables?) and was carbohydrate-heavy enough to fill the tummy before a big night out.”

Although we’re huge fans of this wallet-friendly pasta bake, it traditionally takes a bit of time to prepare and cook. So when the craving for tuna mornay kicks in 10 minutes from dinner time, we’ve conjured up the perfect recipe (it’s even got vegetables snuck in!)

Hooray for 10-minute mornay!

Alison has taken her love for mornay to another level by creating a recipe for tuna mornay that can be whipped up in a jiffy.

This mornay uses a bunch of convenient and budget-friendly ingredients like store-bought bechamel sauce, microwave brown rice, frozen veggies, pre-grated cheese and of course, canned tuna.

Plus, the recipe only has 4 steps so you’ll get dinner on the table before you can even say tuna mornay.

And if that’s not convincing enough, here’s what the taste.com.au community had to say:

“I am no cook, but managed this recipe, it was easy to follow simple and I didn’t burn it so that is always a plus for me. Tasted nice too. I can now add this to the simple recipes I can cook.” – silvernight

“Simple and easy recipe to make. Easy instructions and tasty meal. Will make it again.” – jnashie

“Excellent cheap, quick and very tasty family-friendly dish – even the “tuna hater” loved it!” – loody
