Making you own tomato sauce from scratch is easy – plus you can give it your own special twist with your favourite herbs and spices!
How to make tomato sauce
You will need:
2.5kg chopped tomatoes into a large pot
2 chopped onions
10 whole cloves
2 tablespoons salt
1 tablespoon sweet paprika
1/4 teaspoon of ground allspice
1/2 cup all sugar
2 cups white vinegar
Salt and pepper, extra, to season
Method:
Step 1: Place tomatoes, onions, cloves, salt, paprika, and allspice in a large pot over low heat. Stir to combine and simmer for 1 hour.
Step 2: Add sugar and vinegar to the tomato mixture and stir through. Simmer for 1 1/4 hours, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
Step 3: To strain, place sieve over a large bowl. Pour the tomato mixture into the sieve. Use a spatula to help extract the tomato liquid. Discard the mixture from the sieve and pour the tomato liquid into a sterilised jar. Seal and store in the fridge for up to 1 month.
