There’s no shortage of delicious dishes you can make with this trusty and economical ingredient.
But did you know you can make rice in the microwave? It’s true!
Here’s how to cook rice in the microwave
These cooking times work for up to 400g (2 cups) of rice.
Step 1: Place the rice in a microwave-safe bowl and add enough water to cover by 2cm. To measure, place your index finger on the top of the rice – the water should reach the first joint of your finger.
Step 2: Cover with 2 layers of plastic wrap. Line the microwave turntable with non-stick baking paper to catch any spills. Cook on High/800watts/100% for 5 minutes.
Step 3: Cook, covered, on Medium/ 500watts/50% for a further 7 minutes. Set aside for 5 minutes – this allows the rice to continue cooking. Use a fork to separate grains.
Can you freeze cooked rice?
Cooked rice can be frozen and saved for another meal. For the best flavour, it’s recommended to eat the rice within 2 weeks of freezing, however it is safe to eat for up to 12 months if stored properly. TIP: Reheat frozen rice in the microwave, do not thaw first.
What can you make with day old rice?
Because older rice is drier and less sticky, there are many recipes that benefit from using rice that’s been in the fridge for one day. Ideas to cook with day old rice include: fried rice, soups (simply stir rice through at the end of the cooking process for texture and bulk), stuffed tomatoes or capsicums, and rice pudding.
What are the main types of rice?
There are many types of rice, each with their own flavour profile and uses. The most popular types of rice are: white rice, brown rice, aborio rice, basmati rice, wild rice, black rice and jasmine rice. The cooking times will vary slightly depending on the type of rice.
