Halloween char-spook-erie board recipe and step-by-step guide

Forget a charcuterie board, this Halloween we’re doing a char-SPOOK-erie board. Here’s everything you need to know to make your Halloween centrepiece.

Mum shows how to make a 'meat hand' for Halloween

Every good spooky soirée needs a devilishly delicious spread of food.

Halloween is a great time of the year to get creative in the kitchen and conjure up a spooky spread that’ll wow kids and adults alike (and if you’re terrible at making food look good you can pass it off as being gross in a Halloween kind of way).

When Halloween rolls around we’re always on the lookout for new ways to make our Halloween treats even creepier! In the past, we’ve made Dracula’s fang ice-cream sandwiches that even our dentists would be scared of, and frightening Fanta scones that are sure to keep the monsters at bay.

But our latest ghoulishly good recipe is not for the faint-hearted. BEWARE…

The char-SPOOK-erie

Also known as the amputated appetiser or a scare-cuterie, this spooky party platter is probably one of the most disgusting (in a good way) things we’ve ever made. The char-SPOOK-erie is essentially comprised of our favourite charcuterie board foods – meats, cheeses and bread, all made to look like an arm that’s a bit worse for wear (to put it lightly).

In 2021, food blogger ghoul at heart created this gruesome recipe and it has turned out to be one of her most popular recipes on Pinterest. She said: “It’s the one that gets flagged all the time as disturbing content. I’ll admit, it is pretty realistic looking. But, really there’s nothing to be afraid of, it’s just a charcuterie board in a Halloween costume!

How to make a char-SPOOK-erie

This spookified cheese platter has been recreated by a ton of creators on TikTok and is seeing heaps of viral success, so we thought it was time we put a taste.com.au twist on this grotesque platter.

For the arm, we used a baguette because bread makes everything better. The palm of the hand was cream cheese mixed with French onion soup mix and chives, and then the fingers were made from twiggy sticks. Once we assembled all of these ingredients into the most limb-like way possible, we then covered the entire arm in prosciutto as it eerily looks a lot like muscle… I don’t think we’ll ever look at prosciutto the same way again.

This eerie entrée is 100% guaranteed to make your Halloween party guests gasp as you walk in. We received a LOT of weird looks when we walked around the office with it and a “that’s disgusting” comment (again, in a good way) when riding the elevator. So if that’s a reaction you’d love from your Halloween party guests then definitely give this char-SPOOK-erie a go.

These mummified (not literally) sausage rolls are so simple to make and will look so good alongside the rest of your spooky spread that the kids might just be too scared to eat them. Make sure to serve them with tomato sauce for maximum gore effect.
