Custard powder scone recipe adds new flavour to an old fave
You (or Nan) have probably got this ingredient at the back of the pantry. Here’s how to use it to take your scones to a new flavour high.
It’s always baking season for us… so it pays to have something quick and easy on hand to whip up when unexpected guests come through the doors.
That’s why the simplest baked treat that’s currently (really, always) taking the world by storm is the humble scone.
Every good baker should have a classic scone recipe under their belt – it’s Baking 101.
Mum, Dad, Nan, your uncle, your neighbour and everyone else you know have probably all got their classic scone recipes that’ll never go out of fashion.
And, while a tried-and-true classic scone recipe never fails anyone, they’re also really easy to spin up so you can get creative and use fun ingredients (or ingredients that would otherwise be collecting dust in the back of the pantry).
What ingredient, you ask? It’s one that is full of nostalgia and was always a favourite of Grandma’s. The magical ingredient that we’ve been using to upgrade the classic scone is…custard powder!
Our custard powder scones
When our foodie Tracy started experimenting with custard powder in her scones, we were luckily on hand to give them a try. We can confirm they are incredible! The custard powder adds a subtle custardy flavour to the scones that pairs deliciously with a classic jam and cream (or cream and jam if that’s your preferred method, we don’t judge) combo.
BUT here at taste.com.au, we like to take things to the next level so we’re enjoying these custard powder scones with silky custard folded into the whipped cream (sorry jam). To make this cream we’re whipping out the custard powder again, plus milk and sugar to make a quick, foolproof custard. Once the custard is cool, it gets folded through whipped cream to create the most delicious custard cream concoction ever. We won’t blame you for wanting to just eat the cream by the mouthful.
There’s not much else to say except ready, steady, BAKE! Get our custard powder scones recipe HERE.
More scones with added ingredients
You’re right, this isn’t the first time we’ve added one humble ingredient to scone dough to give them a fresh makeover. Think scones like these pink lemonade scones: an upgrade from regular lemonade scones or scones using some of our favourite chocolates – like these Caramilk and apple scones. And who knew that hundreds and thousands transform them into the most fun fairy bread scones EVER?
