Cottage cheese adds healthy twist to cheescake

Cheesecake and healthy is surely an oxymoron? Or is it? The foodies at Taste.com.au have come upon a miracle that proves it is entirely possible to have your cheesecake and eat it ... without the guilt. Here’s how to make this awesome dessert H.E.A.L.T.H.Y.

It’s one of those ‘aha’ moments in life

If you’re a lover of cheesecake, as much as you might try, sometimes you can’t justify tucking into yet another mini creamy treat. Well, now we have the answer.

We can’t believe we haven’t done it sooner, tbh.

Cottage cheese is the perfect healthy compliment for the humble cheesecake.

Cottage cheese: it’s a thing (again)

That’s right, the cream cheese that was huge in the 90s has made a big comeback this year. It all started with a TikTok influencer posting videos of her dunking various raw veg into a combination of cottage cheese and mustard while on a weight loss journey (most of them have gone viral).

Soon enough, people started getting more creative with cottage cheese, baking it into slices, muffins and desserts. With all these cottage cheese treats going viral on the internet, we challenged our Nutrition Editor Chrissy Freer to make cheesecake using cottage cheese instead of the usual cream cheese.

The best protein-packed dessert

By switching the cream cheese for a magic combo of cottage cheese and high-protein yoghurt, Chrissy made little cheesecakes with reduced fat AND bulked out protein to ensure we stay fuller for longer.

They’re crustless (no butter and bikkies here!) and we also used maple syrup instead of refined sugar. So some might call these little desserts angelic. They sure do taste it.

Cottage cheese is a super food, low in calories but high in protein.

Does cottage cheese actually work in cheesecake?

What these cheesecakes lack in cream cheese, they make up for in a beautiful velvety, soft texture. Luscious and creamy, while zesty and sweet, these mini cheesecakes are our new number one. We can’t get over them.

The best part? They only require 15 minutes of prep, and 20 minutes of cooking time. Simple! Quick! Easy! Take note though; patience is a virtue, and you’ll need to factor in cooling time (1 hour) and chilling time in the fridge (2 hours). Good things come to those who wait.
