Christmas crack is going viral - here’s how to get in on it
This simple toffee treat has taken Australia by storm. Here’s how to make it at home and everything else you need to know about the addictive festive fare.
Whether it be rocky road, pavlova or a trifle, these sweet treats have become synonymous with the end-of-year festivities.
However, a newcomer has entered the chat – in a big way – and we reckon it might be our favourite one yet. Say hello to our best-ever Christmas crack.
What is Christmas crack made of?
Made from a base of savoury salted biscuits, a layer of caramel toffee, topped with dark chocolate and finished with a drizzling of white chocolate and M&M’s, the sweet gets its name because of the fact that it is so darn addictive.
Unlike some toffee recipes, this one doesn’t require you to use a candy thermometer, making it super accessible for even beginner bakers.
The origins of Christmas crack
This deceptively simple dessert was made famous by our pals over in America. In their version, they use a salted cracker known as a “saltine”, however we just call it a Salada.
It wasn’t until a few years ago when we posted our version of this Christmas treat did it have Aussies swooning. And still to this day.
The combination of a salty, crispy biscuit base with soft toffee and a rich chocolate topping is just *chefs kiss* and we’re not the only ones to agree. After we recently shared the recipe on our social media channels, it has amassed over 125,000 video views with hundreds of shares, comments and likes.
Not to mention the 5-star reviews on our website and thousands of recipe saves.
Perfecting the ultimate Christmas salted cracker toffee

Caramilk Christmas crack: We’ve swapped the Salada biscuits for Jatz and included everyone’s favourite chocolate, Caramilk. The results are a golden blend of caramelised white chocolate complemented by a salty biscuit base and chewy toffee centre. Try the recipe HERE.
Choc-mint Christmas crack: We haven’t forgotten about you, mint lovers. This version features a layer of peppermint-spiked chocolate, and is topped with crushed mint chocolate balls. Check it out HERE.
Fairy bread Christmas crack: Christmas crack gets a very Aussie treatment with this rainbow-studded sweet. Dark chocolate is replaced with white chocolate, and sprinkled with hundreds and thousands, and rainbow star sprinkles. Grab the recipe HERE.
