Australia’s most controversial cob loaves ranked
Cobb loaves are the unsung food hero of any party. From the humble cob and dip to crazy ideas like Lasagne soup in a cheesy garlic cob, you can’t really go wrong with these amazing taste bombs. Here’s five of the craziest cob loaf pairings ranked.
We’re going to do a deep dive into the latter. Because when it comes to the party food that everyone secretly loves to beeline for at a soiree, more is more.
Let’s talk crazy cobs
No doubt, we all love a creamed spinach cob. It’s a classic. The one that’s withstood the test of time. But things have gotten a little wild in the bread dip world (yes, there’s a world) and we’re on that mad pot dipping ride.
Here are a few of our favourite freaky finger food favourites from freaky, to freakiest.
5. Meat pie in a cob
The humble meat pie alone is good. Wrap some stupendous bread around it, keep that beautifully crusty top, the lush mince inside, and the sweet tang of tomato sauce, and you’ve got yourself an absolute pearler of a cob. A pearler of anything really – it’s stupendous not even in the cob category. It’s infallible, freaky and fabulous.Meat pie in a cob
4. Easy berry ripple cheesecake cob
Some may say that desserts have no place in the cob world – we’d like to draw your attention to this simple but superb cheesecake variety that uses butternut snap cookies, cream cheese, frozen berries, and other creamy goodness. Some vanilla essence too, which, let’s be frank, never lets us down for some gentle aromatics. The best part? You choose whether you’ll dip in pieces of bread or sweet strawberries. Oh, the options!
3. Butter chicken in a cob
Naan is great with curry, there’s no doubt. So how about a curry in a cob? Face to palm. Of course. Why hadn’t we thought about this aeons ago. Take chicken thigh fillets, tandoori paste, cooking cream (the more the better, tbh), Greek-style yoghurt, and a few other bits and bobs and you’ll find a simple curry, in the most luxurious of spaces. Plus! Who doesn’t love sopping up juices with bread anyway? It’s a match made in curry-cob heaven.
2. Hot-chocolate mousse cob
Again – sincerest apologies for those who think desserts have no place *in* a cob (you’ll hear more about that later), but this hot choccy mousse is a total sweet brain bender. This recipe boasts three – yes, three – different sauces. Hot fudge sauce, marshmallow cream and chocolate mousse. Once you’ve prepped them all you pour them in together, so they are slightly marbled, then top with mini marshmallows, remaining fudge sauce, toasted bread, wafers, pretzels and mini marshmallows. No more need be spoken.Hot chocolate cob dip
1. Lasagne soup in a cheesy garlic cob
Still bangin’ on about the whole drink/sauce/liquid in a cob, this lasagne soup defies logic, but delights mouths. And it might be our most controversial of the series. This recipe essentially involves cheesy baked lasagne strips, kale (health!), crispy, cheesy cob insides and croutons, and some sort of wizardry where the soup doesn’t break the cob walls, but lies snuggly within for your dipping pleasure. This one is a hug in a cob bowl.
What are other people saying about cob loaf recipes?
When we asked our social media community what they thought about controversial cobs, and more specifically what we should by absolutely no means ever place within a cob, the answers were interesting.
Firstly some great responses below:
Stephanie – Shoes
Sharon – My cat
Tom – Socks
We’re really happy to have cleared that up. We were going to release a shoes-and-socks cob next week but have now paused.
In other more relevant news we were told in no uncertain terms that the following items are not allowed:
Jason – steak (fair)
Laura – corn on the cob, not in the cob (ha!)
Jamie – any sort of curry (oops)
Jessica – anything sweet (ummm)
And to our delight one member said:
Bel – I welcome any ingredients into my cob loaf (hurrah!)
We like the sound of that.
