The expert food editors at taste.com.au have revealed the secret formula to converting recipes for a slow cooker and oven… and it could change your life. The best news is: it’s surprisingly uncomplicated!

Food director Michelle Southan says: “We know how much our audience love to slow cook, especially in the winter months. However, we appreciate that you don’t always have the luxury of time. This formula makes it possible for you to speed up the cooking time of your favourite crockpot curry or, alternatively, allows you to take your favourite stovetop or oven dinner and leave it unattended to bubble away in the slow cooker while you’re at work.”

Converting slow cooker recipes for oven

If you have a favourite crockpot recipe, but would love to hurry things up and cook it in a conventional oven, the main thing to take into account is that you will need to increase the liquid by about a 1/2 cup to 1 cup.

Alternatively, to convert your favourite casserole, stew or curry to the slow cooker, decrease the liquid by 1/2 cup to 1 cup.

Our foodies have also provided a handy chart that shows how long it takes to cook something in the oven or stovetop compared to a slow cooker, so you can easily convert as needed.

For example, what takes 30 minutes in the oven is most likely to take up to 2.5 hours in a crockpot on high or up to 6 hours on low. Check out the infographic below.
