A new variety of apple is coming to the fruit section that’s so pretty you’ll blush. The Kissabel apple by Montague apple growers is a completely new varietal that’s a gorgeous velvet red on the outside and on the inside.

With flesh that ranges from a just-kissed pink to a vampy crimson, the GMO-free apples are created using technology developed in France by IFO growers.

Wild, red-fleshed crabapples are improved by breeding with traditional eating apple strains like Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, and Red Delicious to create a sharp and tangy flavour with high acidity, a sweet finish, and a flirty rouge centre.

The star-shaped cross section is the cherry on top of the beautiful apple, new to the Australian market.

20 years after its first successful propagation in Europe, the Kissabel apple is finally ready to paint the town red – but you’ll have to be quick. The harvest season for Kissabel apples is very short and is limited to between late March and early-to-mid May, with only a handful of growers cultivating the apple species in Australia.

Grown in research and development orchards in Stanthorpe in Queensland, Batlow in New South Wales, Harcourt, Yarra Valley and Narre Warren North in Victoria, Adelaide Hills in South Australia, Tamar Valley and Huon Valley in Tasmania, the apples will be mainly available in Coles supermarkets, Costco, and independent greengrocers.
