How to make Fantales at home
They taste JUST like the originals.
Last year, Nestlé announced that it would be discontinuing Fantales. I’ll be honest, it hit the taste team hard. I can’t actually remember a time when these chocolate-covered chewy caramels weren’t in our lives – they were invented in 1930, after all.
Just try and name one kid in Australia who didn’t love reading the movie star stories printed on the wrappers (we’ll wait). But the real joy lay inside that wrapper: thick caramel that stuck gloriously to your teeth, coated in smooth chocolate.
Goodbye Fantales… for now
When we heard the news of Fantales’ axing, we had two choices: race to the nearest supermarket to fight it out for the last few packets of Fantales in the lolly aisle… or jump into the Taste Test Kitchen to see if we could recreate our own versions. We’re lovers not fighters, so we chose the latter. And a year on, boy are we glad we did.
We enlisted recipe creator Tiffany Page (of air fryer crumpet garlic bread fame!) with the task of making imitation Fantales and she leapt into action, starting with the homemade caramel.
Making our homemade ice-cube tray ‘Fantales’
To get that thick, almost toffee-like consistency, Tiffany made a caramel on the stove. We then had the genius idea to use ice-cube trays as molds, to create that classic Fantale shape. When Tiffany poured the caramel, she had to work quickly. “The caramel was still hot going into the tray,” she said, “and as it starts to cool down it sets pretty much straight away.”
As she left the caramel to set in the trays, Tiffany had concerns. “I was worried they would stick to the ice-cube trays,” she says. But she needn’t have worried. “The caramels just popped out!” she said.
Homemade ‘Fantales’: the verdict
Tiffany said these were “really fun” to make, adding: “They were so much easier than I thought they would be… and tasted delicious!”
These little treats got a big thumbs up from everyone on the taste team – and we can confirm Tiffany has nailed that quintessential stick-to-the-teeth Fantale consistency too!
But the best bit? Because they were made in an ice-cube tray, they’re twice the size of OG Fantales.
