Here’s the scoop: Australia’s best and most iconic ice creams ranked
They are some of the nation’s most favourite ice creams but which ones are the best? Delicious takes a look at the top nine. Have your say in our poll.
We scoured servo ice cream cabinets and supermarket aisles to bring you a selection of classic Aussie ice creams that for many invoke summer nostalgia.
But how do they stack up?
Delicious has ranked the top nine and included a poll at the bottom to see if you agree so make sure you have your say.
9. GIANT SANDWICH
Restaurant iterations on an ice cream sandwich have perhaps ruined this one for me. A giant disappointment would be closer to the mark for this distinctly West Australian entry.
Tacky biscuit sticks to the fingers and the molars, I spend more time trying to work it out of my teeth than I do eating it.
The ice cream is basic and while I get that for many there’s pure summer memories here, I think time and ice cream innovation have passed this one by.
8. PADDLE POP CHOCOLATE
Perhaps the definition of basic. Obviously, it’s in that category of kid’s ice creams and yes, most kids like things basic, but it’s perhaps one that you wouldn’t be stealing a bite of.
Dare I say, it just tastes cheap.
7. MAXIBON
An ice cream for the indecisive or a boss move in the realms of ice cream purchase? I’d go with the latter.
Half classic ice cream sandwich, half chocolate and hazelnut smothered delight, the vanilla ice cream flecked with choc chips.
Really, what’s not to like?
6. SPLICE PINE LIME
Best when the mercury is rising a Splice offers respite from the heat and a good kick of intense flavour.
The pineapple and lime coating gets the thumbs up as does the vanilla centre, which with the coating takes on an almost yoghurt like tang.
Not unpleasant. However, a warning, brain freeze is a very real danger. “Brain freezeeee!”
5. WEIS MANGO
Aussie made since 1957, using all Australian fruit and dairy, the Weis sits in that Splice category: something cold and tropical for the hottest of summer days.
How does it stand up against the Splice? We think the Weis has it by the slimmest of margins, but maybe that’s just a love of mango.
4. CHOCOLATE CORNETTO
Head-to-head with the Drumstick, the Cornetto seems more about the ice cream with less in the way of toppings.
It just doesn’t seem to have as much bang for your buck. On the plus side, the wafer cone is more robust, but when it comes down to it, we’re Team Drumstick.
3. DRUMSTICK CLASSIC VANILLA
There’s a very definite sequence of events with a Drumstick. First, it’s the hit of peanuts, then the ice cream and the sweet cone.
Finally, the tip of the cone filled with chocolate and that important last bite. It’s a classic for a reason.
2. BUBBLE O’ BILL
There’s a lot going on in the Bubble O’ Bill: solid chocolate back, the multi-coloured and flavoured ice cream, bubblegum nose, and of course the iconic cowboy face.
You might feel like a kid for five minutes while dismantling it but the nostalgia for some doesn’t stop there.
Did you know there’s adult Bubble O’ Bill pyjama sets and socks? I think we could all benefit from channelling our inner child once in a while.
1. GOLDEN GAYTIME
Aussies have been enjoying a Golden Gaytime since 1959, or a Cookie Crumble if you’re from across the ditch.
Textural with that crunchy biscuit coating, chocolate dipped and with a double hit of toffee and vanilla ice cream there’s a hint of bygone luxury; a time before we started banging on about Madagascan vanilla and Himalayan salt in our ice cream.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a posh ice cream but there’s a reason why this is an icon, and something that’s regularly imitated on fine dining menus.
It’s because it’s so damn satisfying. Hands down our winner.
