Christmas is fast approaching and we can’t contain our excitement! At Taste, we’re already getting into the Christmas spirit by whipping up some incredible recipes for the festive season (which you can find right now in our Christmas cookbook).

If you’re like us and are just itching to put up the Christmas tree and start making a Chrissy pavlova or other festive treats, then we have the perfect recipe that you can keep up your sleeve for December… or make today (we’re not judging!) It’s a Christmas crack that is sure to be a winner.

What is Christmas crack?

Christmas crack is a simple, festive dessert which originated in the USA. It’s made of a salty cracker base topped with toffee and chocolate. It’s the perfect combination of salty and sweet.

Christmas crack was a HUGE trend last year, and for good reason – it’s irresistible! Everyone always goes especially crazy for our OG Christmas crack recipe, which combines salted biscuits with gooey caramel toffee, melted chocolate and delicious M&M’s. It was incredibly tasty, but we don’t need to tell you that when this review says it all:

“This ‘crack’ is outstanding. I’ve made it many times and people keep on coming back for more. Delicious-ness personified!” – seb24258

The viral Christmas crack for the 2024 festive season

Enter our brand-new gingerbread Christmas crack. Dare we say it, this one may be even better than the original (but you’ll have to try it for yourself and let us know).

Taste food editor, Elisa Pietrantonio, is the brains behind this genius invention and it’s one of her favourites.”Christmas crack lovers, get ready for possibly the tastiest version that’s come out of the Taste test kitchen” she says. “We’ve stayed true to the original recipe and kept that crispy Salada base, flecked with bursts of salt, and then topped it with a spiced caramel toffee that tastes exactly like gingerbread would.”

It really is the perfect salty-sweet combo, now with an extra Christmassy taste.

How to make gingerbread Christmas crack

To make this sweet treat, you’ll firstly need the basics of a crack recipe: savoury salted biscuits, chocolate, butter and sugar. Then, to spice things up, you’ll want to add ground mixed spice, ginger, and of course, gingerbread men, into the mix.

Remember, Christmas crack is all about the layers, and in this recipe, Elisa has gone all out. She’s created a moreish gingerbread toffee layer which is topped with a mix of decadent dark chocolate and milk chocolate, and then drizzled with white chocolate. To top it off, she’s decorated it with gingerbread men and gold sugar crystals (it looks almost too good to eat!)

It’s also super easy to put together, with no baking involved. Just pop it in the fridge for 2 hours until set and you’ll have the ultimate Christmas treat.
