Dump cakes are the new baking trend
You're looking at a baking convert.
There, I said it. The truth is, I’m more of a cooking fanatic than a baking fanatic, choosing to make pesto or curry instead of beating egg whites until fluffy.
My reluctance to bake, however, doesn’t align with my frequent desire eat cake. I crave a gooey chocolate cake or light lemony sponge quite regularly, so when recipe developer Tiffany Page told me about dump cakes, I realised it would finally be possible to cheat my way to my best cakes ever.
No mixer required.
How to make a dump cake
It’s the ultimate hack. You literally throw the ingredients in the cake pan and let your oven do all the work! Tiffany loves to use a layering technique, where she adds one ingredient at a time. For example: biscuits, then sour cream, then cake mix, followed by milk and butter on top.
Tiffany says: “Dump cakes are so good because they can be made with minimal effort, the flavours are easily interchangeable depending on what you have in the cupboard, and they are beyond delicious.
Dump cakes: now with condensed milk
“I always have a tin of condensed milkin the cupboard and I love adding it to my dump cakes as it caramelises and sets with the biscuits making a deliciously gooey base,” adds Tiffany. “The trick is waiting long enough after the cake is baked to let it cool and set before devouring it!”
Here are the best 4 dump cake recipes I’ve tried since discovering them.
Lemon and condensed milk dump cake
This gooey lemon cake features all your favourite ingredients: butternut snap biscuits, lemon curd, vanilla cake mix and more. The result is a soft, sweet and buttery bake that is just as good served with a cuppa for afternoon tea as with ice-cream for dessert.
