Arnott’s Malt ‘O’ Milk: recipes, biscuit review

It’s a classic and it’s having a resurgence.

It’s the humble Malt ‘O’ Milk. These classic biscuits, with their nostalgic malted milk flavour, have long been enjoyed dunked into a cuppa, shouldered around cream to make a slice, or crumbled into a cake. You name it, the versatile Malt ‘O’ Milk can do it.

What are Malt ‘O’ Milks?

As biscuits go, the Malt ‘O’ Milk is a relatively mild flavoured option. Made predominantly from wheat flour, sugar and malt, it is a softer biscuit that comes in a rectangular shape, perfect for dunking and enjoying with family, friends, or solo with a good book.

How can I cook with Malt ‘O’ Milk biscuits?

Because it’s a more subtle flavour, the Malt ‘O’ Milk can go in just about anything. Crushed in a dessert ball or as a cheesecake base, used whole in an eye-catching slice or just thrown into an ice-cream treat.

The return of the Malt

We’ve seen a few malty and biscuity items making a comeback this year. Biscoff is of course all the rage right now (check out our no-bake Biscoff cheesecake), while Milo is enjoying a bit of time on top (largely due to this mind blowing 2-ingredient Milo microwave cake). So we weren’t surprised to see that Aussies are falling back in love with Malt ‘O’ Milks too. (For the record, we never actually stopped loving them.)

Here are a few trending recipes that have blown our Malt ‘O’ Milk-lovin’ socks off:

Malt ‘O’ Caramilk truffles: This is perhaps one of our favourite Malt ‘O’ Milk recipes, and social media tells us it might be one of yours too, with 100k+ of you having a good click and gander at it. This recipe takes a smooth and velvety mixture of condensed milk, melted Cadbury Caramilk and desiccated coconut coated over balls of crumbled Malt ‘O’ Milk and almond. Among the hundred-or-so comments, Peta’s “yes please” just about sums it up for us.

Malt ‘O’ Milo slice: We’re all suckers for a dessert… and this slice version is no exception. Taking us straight back to childhood, it uses two Aussie icons – Malt ‘O’ Milk and Milo – to create a crumbly, cream cheese slice. The best part? It takes only 20 minutes to make.

Malt ‘O’ Milk ice-cream sundae: Yes ice-cream is great, but have you ever crumbled Malt ‘O’ Milk over the top? Throw in a few marshmallow and raspberry lollies, as well as melted chocolate and hundreds and thousands, and you might just have the coolest cool treat out there. All thanks to the humble M ‘O’ M, of course. It’s the star of the sundae show.
