Anchovies or pepperoni: Most controversial pizza toppings revealed

Forget the age-old debate about whether pineapple should go on pizza — there are other toppings which people say shouldn’t be added to the mix. See the list and have your say.

It’s hard not to like pizza. It’s got the carbs, it’s got the cheese, it’s got the veggies (sometimes), and it’s got the meat (hi there, meat lovers). And the best part is that they’re totally customisable.

There really aren’t many rules to the art of topping pizza, but according to taste.com.au followers, there are a few ingredients that cause a bit of a stir – and some of them may shock you.

Pepperoni

Yep, you read that right. Somebody said pepperoni.

According to follower Lily: “Cured meats just aren’t the best on pizzas.”

We don’t think we’ve ever met a pepperoni pizza we don’t like.

Tandoori chicken … all chicken in fact!

To us, the Indian-Italian hybrid pizza was revolutionary, especially these tandoori chicken pizzas with tahini dressing.

But follower Selina said: “That trend was SO WRONG.”

That’s not even the most controversial part though; apparently chicken in general is one of the least liked pizza toppings amongst taste followers!

Anchovies

Although we’re anchovy fans, we weren’t surprised to see that what our followers called “hairy fish” weren’t a pizza topping favourite.

Marisa even said: “They don’t deserve to be in any dish.”

That’s a huge call!

All sweet things

Pizza has evolved over the years, and we’ve even seen it become an after-dinner sweet treat like this choc-hazelnut and berry version.

However, there are some people who are opposed to this concept, with a follower stating: “Stop trying to make dessert pizzas happen.”

Olives

A supreme pizza staple, olives are considered a non-negotiable topping by some.

Follower Stella even said: “Pizza isn’t pizza without kalamata olives.”

But according to a large number of Facebook users they just don’t make the cut.

Follower Anna said: “They’re just too overpowering.”

Rocket

Leafy veggies might just have to stick to what they’re good at (salads), with many Facebook users like Wendy coming forward saying that they’re one of the worst pizza toppings: “Green leafy stuff goes soft and yuck.”

Seafood

Like many other Aussies, we love a seafood moment. But on pizza, it seems like some people aren’t a fan: “I do eat some seafood but definitely not on a pizza.”

Egg

We love an egg on a burger, but egg on a pizza? We’re not too sure about that.

Most say it’s not anything worth trying, with a few of our followers even saying it’s the worst topping.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin on pizza has apparently been done by the Italians so it must be legit, with a follower saying: “I had pumpkin pizza in Naples and it was amazing – pumpkin puree, stuffed pumpkin flowers, soft cheese – amazing! No tomato is the secret I think.”

However, the sweetness is a big no-no to many others, with one person stating: “It’s way too sweet for a savoury pizza.”
