A pinnacle dairy event at Tatura is underway, as young guns put their showmanship to the test.
More than 800 cattle will take to the showing stage this week for 35th International Dairy Week at Tatura, as results begin to trickle in.
Glencoe, SA, teenager Shae Tweddle’s interstate travel led to her Grand Champion Heifer win on Monday with Viewfort Tatoo Pink.
Her mum, Angela Tweddle, said Shae had competed at IDW for eight years, and also placed second in the Holstein Australia Youth Challenge and third in the Intermediate showmanship section.
The Tweddle family milk 320 cows on a 200ha farm, with mostly Holsteins.
“Myself and my family have been showing here since it started 35 years ago,” Angela said.
“Shae has that natural ability to work with animals.”
She said Shae also competed in the Australian Showjumping Championships in NSW, while the family bidded on Viewfort Tatoo Pink from the grandstands.
“My friend was there bidding on the animals for us while we were away, the cow went from the sale to their place at Irrewillipe, and they prepared her prior to the show and we sent another cow there as well,” Angela said.
“We all work together and we’re a good team, we all want to achieve the same things.”
Angela said Shae loved working in both fields, and competed in the Adelaide Royal and Victorian Winter Fair with her cows.
IDW is the largest annual dairy conference and sale in the southern hemisphere, with more than 150 breeders on site. It will include seven national breed shows, a national youth show, workshops, cattle sales, and more.
