Grain and oilseed prices for Melbourne, Adelaide, Oaklands
Canola prices have dipped from recent peaks but remain above season-start levels, as global futures slide and growers report patchy crop emergence across key locations. See the current prices for grains and oilseeds.
Benchmark grain prices in Melbourne have held steady despite what is continuing strong demand for feed grain.
The current, uncommitted canola seed prices, were $20 a tonne lower than new crop prices. This suggested no immediate shortage in seed.
Agricultural consultant Colin Peace said French rapeseed futures had dropped by 6 per cent or $55 a tonne in the past three weeks due to better-than-expected harvest yields in the northern hemisphere.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg canola futures have fallen 8 per cent or $65 a tonne in the past three weeks, despite dry conditions in the Canadian Prairies.
In addition new crop canola was quoted at $808 a tonne on a Victorian port basis. This was $66 a tonne below the seasonal peak reached three weeks ago.
And despite recent declines, new-crop canola prices remained above the season opening value of $740 a tonne recorded five months ago.
Domestically there were still concerns about uneven germination particularly in canola crops.
“We are seeing a tale of two crops, some plants are struggling in dry soil, while others have only just emerged,” he said.
“A month ago we were talking about above-average rainfall; now the concern is whether there’s enough in the profile to see crops through to harvest.”
