Grain and oilseed prices for Melbourne, Adelaide, Oaklands

Canola prices bump up to $800 a tonne in Victoria this week. See how grain and oilseed prices are performing.

Victorian canola prices have shot up from $747 a tonne this time last week to $800 a tonne.

Despite the positive price rise there were some concerns about crop selections to fit in winter programs due to tariffs from overseas countries and the world political scene.

Agricultural consultant Colin Peace said the current price being offered for canola futures was $756 which was still $20 a tonne below the current crop price.

He said grain growers would consider rotations for the upcoming season based on a multitude of market factors.

In addition lentils have been a shining light for many growers with a promising seasonal peak price of $950 a tonne which was achieved in January.

“Lentil prices at $950 a tonne are in the highest 20 per cent of prices achieved in the past five years and one of the highest gross margins available,” Mr Peace said.

However, the risk could become evident on March 31 when the deadline for India’s tariff free period ends.

“India’s underlying tariff for lentils is 30 per cent and any reintroduction of this tariff will slow the lentil trade substantially,” he said.

Since the tariff free exports of Australian lentils to India began in 2021, lentil exports to India have grown from 190,000 tonnes or 20 per cent of total lentil exports to 776,000 tonnes or 46 per cent of the total.
