Grain and oilseed prices for Melbourne, Adelaide, Oaklands

Barley and oat prices have dropped as traders clear old stock and confidence grows in new-season crops, easing pressure on livestock producers chasing feed. See the latest prices.

Barley prices have dropped around $6 across the board this week with prices delivered to Melbourne mills sitting at $362 a tonne.

While the news isn’t ideal for cropping farmers it does lift some of the pressure of livestock producers seeking stock feed.

Feed oat prices also dropped by up to $15 a tonne with quotes of $420 a tonne delivered to Melbourne. The price drop was attributed to an ease in drought-related feed grain demand.

Agricultural consultant Colin Peace said grain markets were starting to move towards new-crop pricing.

“Traders are beginning to clear old stock in preparation for promising new-season crops in eastern Australia,” he said.

Mr Peace said confidence in NSW barley production was leading traders to offload stocks to domestic buyers, even at lower premiums compared to new-crop export prices.

Meanwhile, returns for new crop prices were supported by hot weather forecasts in the United States corn belt and positive trends relating to US and China trade relations.

On the domestic front he said welcome falls of rain had helped to boost winter crops and the forecast for this week was looking positive.

“Longer term forecasts from the Bureau are for a better than 60 per cent chance of exceeding

the average rainfall for August and September for South Australia and Victoria, rising to a

better than 70 per cent chance in the northern Mallee and bulk of NSW,” he said.
