THE Barty family chose one of the best weeks in the past 12 months to sell some of their wool.
John Barty of Beverley Merino stud at Redesdale, along with son Lachlan Barty and nephew Alex Lewis — who both work on the family property — sold 89 bales of superfine Merino fleece last week in Melbourne.
With an average micron ranging from 15.5 to 18.5 across the flock, the entire clip consisted of about 400 bales of wool. Mr Barty said they sold it in different lots when it was “advantageous”.
The top line of the Beverley’s wool last week, with a micron of 16.5 and 37 Newtons per kilotex in strength, sold for 1050c/kg.
Mr Barty said their best price for this season was for the wool they sold on contract to New England Wool.
He said the best contract price they received was 1438c/kg for a 15.7-micron line, which met all of the contract specifications.
“It is a lot more attractive to sell on contract. We would always like the wool price to be better,” he said.
“The market has gone up in the past few weeks, so it is all positive though.”
Mr Barty said as the season came away so quickly, their wool was a bit more tender than normal.
“We have about another 80 bales to sell,” he said.
