It’s all part of his training to be the best in the world.
Next week, the 36-year-old from NSW will try to break a decade-old record of shearing 513 merino ewes in nine hours, and with four records already under his belt he’s confident.
“There are 540 minutes in nine hours but I want to do 600,” Mr Te Huia said. “I’d like to make history.”
The third-generation shearer picked up his first shears at the age of nine.
“I used to go with my old man and learned while shearing parts of the sheep,” he said.
By the age of 11 he was shearing side by side with men in their twenties.
“I was the youngest but I still had to do everything the men did,” he said.
Mr Te Huia, of Bathurst, is combining cross fit, swimming, running, weights and early nights into his training to break the record at a Shearing Industry Promotions fundraising event near Dubbo on February 20.
