It was these attributes that helped the agent from TopX at Gracemere in Queensland take out the winners sash in the Australian Livestock and Property Agent’s Association National Young Auctioneers Competition at the Sydney Royal Show last week.
It has been a number of years since a Queenslander won the top award, beating nine competitors from Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and NSW. Mr McKinlay will now travel to the Calgary Stampede in July to compete.
An agent for five years, Mr McKinlay has been honing his auctioneering skills at the weekly store sales for the past four. He said “people skills” were so much of being a good auctioneer as you had to have a good relationship with buyers and vendors.
Jack Hickey of JM Elis and Co at Hamilton was named the national runner-up.
The NSW state Young Auctioneer competition was also held, with Hamish McGeoch from Landmark in Wagga Wagga the winner and Sam Gemmell from Elders in Cootamundra the runner up. Both will compete in the national competition next year.
Meanwhile, the grand champion steer of Sydney Show was sold for 1020c/kg by NSW competitor Kenneth Miall from Landmark Wagga Wagga.
The Angus steer weighed 477kg and made a dollars-a-head value of $4865.
