Virtual reality: Sisters’ video unscrambles perceptions of caged eggs

Two sisters have created a virtual reality experience following the eggs on their family farm from chook to carton and on to the plate, hoping to combat false messages about caged eggs.

TWO sisters have created a virtual reality experience to debunk the negative image of caged-egg farming.

Danyel Cucinotta and Renay Ahmed’s new VR video follows the eggs on their family farm in Werribee all the way from chook to carton and on to the plate. They hope it will soon be used in community groups and schools across the state.

“The VR program actually started as a way to defend ourselves, because every single day we witness videos that just aren’t what we are doing on LT’s Egg Farm,” Ms Cucinotta said.

“Now we’re hoping to spin a positive light and actually make it into something fun and educational.

“It shows people exactly what we’re doing and creates transparency between us and our consumer.

“Maybe people won’t feel so guilty about buying our eggs.

“They can feel a bit more comfortable and say ‘no I’ve seen it, I actually feel comfortable with that’ or ‘no I don’t feel comfortable and I’ve made a better informed decision rather than just because someone told me to’.”

Ms Cucinotta and Ms Ahmed originally wanted to run tours at their farm but chose VR to eliminate the biosecurity risks that come with opening the farm to the public.

They are calling on the Victorian Government to invest in their idea so they can expand it to also include a VR tour of a free-range egg farm, create an app and show the video on a larger scale
