Weaner females: Small Hamilton yarding elevates prices

It was a smaller yarding at the Hamilton female weaner sale, which kept prices high.

LOW heifer numbers greeted buyers at Hamilton today, ensuring prices stayed red hot.

Less than 1500 weaner females were in the Nutrien and Elders yarding.

Agents report local breeders have retained extra numbers to rebuild herds in the abundant season.

Strong live export demand for Herefords weighing just 220kg and better, headed to China.

Just one laneway of Herefords were on offer today.

The opening pen of Angus calves from Sandy Camp sold to 504c/kg, and at 342kg worked out at $724 a head.

The pick of the Herefords was 520c/kg for Wootong Vale’s calves at 294kg, equalling $1528.

There weren’t a lot of classy heifers to suit breeders, and those that were, generally traded above 500c/kg.

Generally, the run of fattening types sold between 480-510c/kg, depending on weight, down to a low of 450c/kg.
