Hamilton weaner sale 2021, day two: Price for steers pushed over 500c/kg

The average price for steers was pushed over 500c/kg at day two of the Hamilton weaner sales. See the sale report.

Summer weaner calf sales kick off

LESS weight helped push the average price for steers over 500c/kg at Hamilton yesterday as the market continued its amazing new year run.

The 2307 yarding included the first drafts of Hereford and Charolais steers to be sold out of the Western District, and the market showed little regard for colour as restockers again chased hard.

While there was a price spread from 444c/kg to over 572c/kg, the bulk of the calves made above 480c/kg to give the sale the best overall liveweight averages seen in the south so far this week.

The breakdown of price results by breed was:

• 1131 Angus steers averaged 500c/kg or $1756 over an average weight of 350kg

• 705 Hereford steers averaged 506/kg or $1675 over 331kg; and

• 104 black baldy averaged 507c/kg or $1670.

There was little price change over the heaviest steers, with the market lifting over more nicely

weighted calves in the 280kg to 330kg range.

Among the lead pens of Angus were Nangana’s opening line of 42 calves that weighed 411kg and sold for 480c/kg to Gippsland bullock finishers.

Once again there was slight premiums evident for European Union accredited stock, with Sandy Camp receiving 485c/kg for their top pen or 46 calves at 416kg which pushed them to $2017.

They sold to Queensland agent Brendan Kelly, KellyCo, who continued to dominate on suitable heavy black EU steers.

The sale which caused a gasp was in the Hereford section when local bullock producer Ian Hermon paid 555c/kg for 30 of the Beerik calves which were EU and weighed 346kg, returning $1909.

The first three laneways of Hereford were all EU accredited and this played a role in boosting the breed’s overall price average.

There was less weight in the whiteface calves overall, which meant more calves sold above 500c/kg.

While there was some feedlot activity, it was a grass driven market at this sale with agents from Gippsland in tussles with NSW orders from Holbrook and northern NSW.

Commission buyer Andrew Lowe was a volume buyer.
