GENETICS Australia may have topped both the Holstein and Jersey proven bull league tables in last year’s Australian Breeding Values but the glory is shared by competitors 12 months on.

Sexing Technologies Australia has taken out Holstein honours in the ABV charts for August 2020 — its CBContender is the top proven Holstein bull with a Balanced Performance Index of 354.

The second ranked bull is the Australian-bred Giles from Genetics Australia with a BPI of 332.

On top proven bulls list (Australia and international), Semex has delivered with Perseus

holding a BPI of 451.

In addition to his Australian genomic information, Perseus’s daughters in Italy, the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States have contributed to his ABV success.

There are three bulls over 400 on the top proven bull list for the Australia and international category.

Leading the young genomic Holstein bull list is Progenesis Proceed with a BPI of 422 from Semex.

Proceed also topped the list in April with a very similar BPI.

It has been a good run for Semex as they lead the young genomic bulls and top proven bulls lists.

There are 12 bulls over 400 on the top genomic Holstein bull list from six different companies. The average daughter fertility of this group is a massive 112.

The group of young genomic Holstein bulls over 400 BPI, includes two polled carriers (heterozygous polled).

Meanwhile, in the Jersey league tables, the number one Australian-proven Jersey bull, Wilsonview IF Matt (BPI 226) maintains the number one position from April.

Matt shows strong ABV results for survival and longevity (110), mastitis resistance (113) and cell count (153) among other traits.

He is followed by two bulls that were bred on Victorian herds in CRVMarvarie (BPI 172) and Tahbilk (BPI 168).

On top proven Jersey bulls list for the Australia and international category, a group of New Zealand Jersey bulls lead in the top proven bull stake, ahead of Matt.

Interestingly, a very high proportion of their strong BPI results is coming from high component, lower volume milk.

On the young genomic Jersey bulls list C Glennen & Co (White Star) have delivered the top Jersey genomic bull again.

Valenblast has moved from second place to number one in August with a BPI of 299.

The top 10 genomic bulls are divided among four companies — Genetics Australia, Agri-Gene, ABS and TLG.

Viking Genetic has topped the Australian Red Breeds charts with VikrTokyo on a BPI 291, maintaining its number one spot from the last ABV release.

His BPI remains highly stable and virtually the same as April despite adding dozens of

daughters in Denmark, Finland, Sweden as well as Australia.

With the top herds for August 2020, T&L Parrish (Illawambra, NSW) comes out on top in the Holstein category with an average BPI of 196

In the Jersey category, C Glennen & Co (White Star) dominated with an average BPI of 108.

In the red breeds category, it’s a tie between RW & BC Graham (Beaulands, South Coast NSW) with an average BPI of 108 and GJ & SE Vagg (Bonnay, Leongatha South, VIC) with an average BPI of 108.

DataGene genetics and delivery group leader Michelle Axford said information about the latest round of ABV listings was easier to access with the latest in reporting technology.

“DataVat is a new industry tool that farmers and service providers have access to and it gives them a window into quite a large, centralised data repository that’s been building over time,” Ms Axford said.

“It allows people to see their breeding values — both for public lists, when people are searching for bulls, trying to figure out what genetics they’re going to use to deliver the next generation of cows in their herd. But also, to drill into individual herd information, and that’s the new part of DataVat, where farmers can securely log in to access their own breeding value information.”
