From the Archives, 1958: Opinions divided as Benaud named Test captain

In 1958, Richie Benaud was named captain of the Australian cricket team for the first Test in the Ashes series in Brisbane. Opinions were divided over Benaud's appointment over vice-captain Neil Harvey. The selectors were vindicated, however, when Benaud led Australia to a 4-0 Ashes victory over the much fancied English side.
