Queensland Election 2015: Tony Abbott unlikely to be at LNP campaign launch
By Amy Remeikis
It doesn't look like Prime Minister Tony Abbott will receive an invitation to the LNP's campaign launch on Sunday.
Queensland Premier Campbell Newman, who has made a big effort to distance his government from the federal Coalition during the state election campaign, scoffed at the idea he would need Mr Abbott to speak at his launch.
"I have said already to you, unlike the Leader of the Opposition [Annastacia Palaszczuk], I don't need someone to hold my hand," he said in Emerald on Thursday.
"The Leader of the Opposition has been propped up for an extraordinary period of time by the federal Labor leader [Bill Shorten].
"He is almost delivering her lines. Is he going to deliver the campaign speech for her?"
When pressed on whether that meant Mr Abbott would not join the state LNP at the launch, Mr Newman just said "he's on leave".
The subject of Mr Abbott has been a prickly one for the Newman government.
The perceived unpopularity of the Prime Minister has been considered potentially damaging to Mr Newman's campaign, with Labor keen to suggest the pair are like-minded.
Mr Abbott has not joined Mr Newman or any LNP candidates on the campaign trail so far, although Acting Prime Minister Warren Truss, who introduced Mr Newman at the 2012 campaign launch, has.
Deputy Prime Minister Julie Bishop is also expected to play a role. The LNP will officially launch its election campaign this weekend at an undisclosed location.
