Victoria's Yarra Valley boasts some of Australia's most prestigious wineries. Mount Mary, Yeringberg, Yarra Yering and others have developed cult followings over the past 40 years for their superbly balanced, elegant products. These wines are lovely, but they are pricey. Thankfully, a new wave has emerged in recent years to give us a taste of Yarra style and charm without breaking the bank.

De Bortoli Vinoque Nebbiolo Rosé 2018, $23-$25

A very pale rosé from De Bortoli's large Yarra operation, this is a savoury drop, with subdued aromas of florals, roses and red berries. It's very dry with quenching balance and tight structure. Screw cap; 12.5 per cent alcohol.

DCB Wine Pinot Noir 2018, $22-$24

A true bargain, the '18 DCB pinot has a succulent core of cherry-like pinot fruit with a foresty overlay adding savoury interest. There's good depth, tannin structure and balance. Appealing now and should develop over a few years. Screw cap; 13.5 per cent alcohol.

Innocent Bystander Syrah 2017, $23-$25

A deliciously harmonious, fruit-driven Yarra shiraz. Dark plum and lightly spicy aromas lead through a palate of easy texture and good length. So drinkable that a bottle can disappear with unseemly haste, so beware! Screw cap; 13.5 per cent alcohol.

Ageing? Drink over two years.
