Logies 2024 As it happened: Larry Emdur wins Gold Logie

Thanks for following the 2024 TV Week Logie awards with us. What a night for 15-year-old Felix Cameron, who took home two Logies and won hearts across the nation with his speeches.

Sam Pang nailed it (again) as host. Boy Swallows Universe scooped five awards, and Rebecca Gibney joined the Hall of Fame.

“Forty years I’ve been in this business, and for 25 maybe 30 times I have sat in this room and wondered what it’s like sitting on this fancy table down here,” Emdur said.

“S--t, I just remembered, I did say that if I won this, I would have all the nominees tattooed on my arse live tomorrow morning. So, see you on the morning show tomorrow, right? Sorry Sylvie I know we had some fancy hotel time planned but looks like I will be doing squats all night.”

Emdur said he loved working in the industry. “I love being in TV and I love being on TV and I have never done anything else and I never wanted to do anything else. Whether it is sitting on The Morning Show couch talking to Lindy Klim about her new product, a face mask for vulvas, or a 150kg truck driver who just won a terracotta bird bath on price is right, I love it.

“Being TV’s most axed man, there has been time for self-doubt. Red Symons, we saw earlier, the first time I got to host Hey Hey it’s Saturday and Red came up to me beforehand and said, if your eyes were any closer together they’d be in the one socket. So times like that, I think I shouldn’t be in this business. It is about my shows, The Chase, The Morning Show, 17 years we have been doing our thing,” he said.

“My TV wife, Kylie Gillies, thank you for absolutely everything. We clicked 17 years ago and we never unclicked. To my real family, my mum and my two sisters, I love you so much, to my late dad, who on the first day going to Channel 7 he said, just be nice to everyone. That was 40 years ago and I remember it to this day. After a while he said, hey how it is going, and I said Dad, there are so many assholes in this business.”

Emdur has been in the business so long he doesn’t need to tell his kids to go to be in awards nights speeches. “They’re 30 and 28, they can do whatever they like.”

He said his kids hadn’t watched free-to-air TV for about 15 years but were proud of him. “Apparently it’s rhyming slang now that if you’re going on a bender, you’re going on a Larry Emdur, so they’re proud of me for that.

He also thanked his wife Sylvie. “After Price is Right, she stuck by me. To my fellow nominees, you guys are all rockstars, and worthy to be up here, I love you all. I had the names of my fellow nominees stitched into the pocket of my suit jacket, because I want to remember this night, this campaign. It is so special to me.,” he said, showing the audience the stitched names. “Let’s get on a Larry Emdur everyone.”

The best part of the Logies is when things get a little loose, and after six (seven? eight?) hours, it is all falling apart.

After incorrectly announcing the best drama program category as best lead actor, Celia Pacquloa declared, “Someone at Channel Seven has f---ed me.” Indeed.

Sparing that, the trophy went to RFDS, a Channel Seven program. Seven just announced RFDS will be returning for a third series so the win is well-timed. The following tweet comes with a language warning.

Ally Langdon has won the Silver Logie for best news or public affairs presenter for her work on A Current Affair. She took over from long-term host Tracy Grimshaw in 2023.

Previously, the Nine presenter worked on 60 Minutes. She gives a shout-out to her family, the show’s producers, and the people whose stories they’ve platformed.

“Everything we do is with heart and soul. If a story doesn’t have heart and soul, we just don’t do it,” Langdon says.

Felix Cameron won’t be taking his Logies to school for show and tell. The breakout star has managed to charm the famously hard-to-please Logies media room, appearing after his latest win to tell everyone that he definitely won’t be taking his Logies to school.

“I reckon someone would nick them and sell them on eBay, so probably not,” said Cameron.

Instead, he has grand plans for them, borrowing a line from iconic Australian film The Castle. “These are going straight to the pool room.”

Have You Been Paying Attention? has won its eighth Logie, taking away the award for best comedy entertainment program at tonight’s ceremony.

Stars Tom Gleisner and Ed Kavalee came up to collect the award, joining their fellow cast mate Sam Pang (who is hosting tonight’s awards, in case you missed it) on stage.

Pang’s dry sense of humour wasn’t missing from the award speech, nor was his banter with Gleisner.

“Tom Gleisner, he is the best presenter a show can ever have… he’s never been sharper. Just backstage he said to me, ‘How good is it being at the ARIAs?’”

Colin From Accounts stars Darren Gilshenan and Helen Thomson present this one, poking fun at their careers as character actors. Gilshenan even does a little Raygun bounce as he hops up to the microphone, marking yet another reference to the Australian breaker.

And Kavalee doesn’t miss a chance to give a jab to the length of tonight’s ceremony. “Only 100 segments to go!” he says, before leaving the stage.

The 15-year-old is quickly becoming the feel-good story of the 64th annual TV Week Logie Awards. Heartfelt Logies moments can be hard to come by, but earlier in the evening Cameron captured the attention of the room as he tearfully paid tribute to his parents, siblings and even his drama teacher following his Graham Kennedy Award win.

Felix went back-to-back taking out best lead actor in a drama, his second Logie for the evening. Much has already been written about the success of Boy Swallows Universe, but on a night when big stories have been hard to come by, Felix Cameron has been a standout.

“The last award I won before tonight was Student of the Week in Grade 5, so this is a big deal,” joked Cameron.

In a charming speech, Cameron thanked the cast and crew for his education on set, makeup, wardrobe, the assistant directors and everything in between. While TV can be a cynical business, the wavering in Cameron’s voice spoke not to insincerity but simply a young kid who can’t quite believe his luck. Cameron has stolen the show at this year’s Logies and you’d be mad to bet against him being back on the Logies stage (and beyond) in the future.

“We’re in the home stretch” I reassured myself, as we headed to that last ad break. But not before a live performance from international music guest, James Bay. His hits Hold Back the River and Let It Go were staples of my early high school days.

But if you ask me – this doesn’t seem like the optimal time for an English singer-songwriter to grace Australian screens. And if you ask him, he’d probably say the same thing. Apparently Bay touched down from London at 6.00am and hasn’t really slept since then.

I would describe the performance’s vibe as ‘cheerful acoustic’. His denim jacket and broad-brimmed hat are definitely giving country chic. Bay does his best to rouse the crowd – “Logies, get up!” he yells. A few people around the room do rise to their feet, to his credit.

It’s a far stretch from the iconic performer lineup of 2014. Jason Derulo, Ed Sheeran, Kylie Minogue and Tina Arena all sang on the Logies stage that year. Or what about 2012, which had Flo Rida, One Direction, Delta Goodrem and Seal?

But back to the reality of free-to-air TV in 2024. Bay sings two short songs, and then calls it a night. A pretty good gig for him, if you ask me. I just hope he gets to see Sydney in the daylight before his 24-hour flight back to the UK.
