Bega’s big cheese resigns with chief operating officer to step up

By Jessica Yun

Bega Cheese’s chief executive Paul van Heerwaarden will step down from his position within the next few months, with chief operating officer Pete Findlay set to take his place.

Van Heerwaarden has been with the dairy giant for more than a decade and has been in the CEO role for nearly six years.

During his time in the top job, he oversaw the acquisition of US multinational snacking giant Mondelez’ grocery business in Australia, which included Vegemite and other Kraft brands, as well as the acquisition of Lion Dairy and Drinks, which brought household names Yoplait, Big M and Pura Milk back into Australian hands.

Executive chairman Barry Irwin commended Van Heerwaarden for managing the company through many changes and for his dedication to dealing with challenges and opportunities.

“Paul remains committed to the company and as always is keen to ensure the best outcomes for the business and that the transition to a new CEO is well planned and continues the stable leadership which has always been a key element in the success of the company,” Irwin said.

His replacement Findlay has been with Bega Cheese since December 2019, when he began as chief financial officer.

He held that role for nearly three years before starting as chief operating officer just two months ago.

Findlay’s transition to the top job follows in the footsteps of his predecessor: Van Heerwaarden was also chief operating officer at Bega before starting as CEO in December 2017.

Van Heerwaarden helped prime Findlay for the role, Irvin indicated.

“One of the features of Paul’s leadership has been his willingness to give opportunity to others and his capacity to develop people. Paul is always keen to recognise the capacity and capabilities of individuals and his team,” said Irvin.

“The board is now pleased to announce that Pete will transition to CEO with Paul’s support in the coming months.”

Before joining Bega, Findlay was chief financial officer at convenience chain 7-Eleven for three years, and had the same role at Melbourne IT before that. No date has been set for when Van Heerwaarden will depart.
