Police said the 19-year-old male from Hobart had set off from the Wedge River carpark to Moonlight Buttress in Sentinel Range, near Strathgordon, on Thursday.

A land and air search, involving 20 personnel, began on Thursday evening through inclement weather conditions and fog.

The rescue helicopter crew found the teen’s body about 9am on Friday, before a recovery operation commenced.

Police Inspector Philippa Burk said described the death as “a tragic accident”.

“We always give messages to bushwalkers and people in respect to our climate at this time of year,” she said.

“It is a tragic incident and my thoughts go out to the family who is suffering at this time. It is just a tragedy.

“Our safety message is always, tell people where you’re going, have your phone, log yourself in the parks register and make sure people are aware of your trip and make sure you have adequate clothing.”
