Man with underwear fetish jailed for receiving and sending porn

A child porn obsession fuelled by an underwear fetish has landed a married Tasmanian man with no prior convictions in jail.

Wynard man Derick Cook has been sentenced to nine months in prison after pleading guilty to child exploitation charges.

A WYNYARD man with an unusual obsession with female underwear has been sentenced to nine months in prison after pleading guilty to child exploitation charges.

Police raided Derick Cook’s house in August 2018 after information received from Queensland.

They seized a computer tower on which almost 1700 child exploitation images were found.

Chief Justice Alan Blow said no videos were found and some images were duplicated.

“Mr Cook only had two images in the worst category – category five. That category relates to images depicting sadism, bestiality or child abuse,” he said.

“Ignoring duplicates, there were 289 images in category four, which involved penetrative sexual activity between children or with adults.”

The court heard Mr Cook admitted obtaining images from a number of sources including a Russian photo-sharing website and that he had distributed images via his phone.

The 56-year-old married man has no prior convictions.

Chief Justice Blow said Cook started looking at child pornography as a result of having an unusual interest in female underwear and had sought professional assistance.

The court was told Cook did not have any direct contact with any of the photographed children.

Six months of Cook’s sentence was suspended on the condition he commit no offence punishable by imprisonment within 18 months from his release from jail.

His name has been placed on the register under the Community Protection Offender Reporting Act.
