Launceston police ask for public assistance in molotov cocktail attack

POLICE have released footage of a person believed to have been behind a fire bombing attack on the Launceston Police Station in a renewed call for public assistance.

A molotov cocktail was thrown into the rear carpark of the station about 10.50pm on June 12.

Detective Inspector Craig Fox said police were keen to speak to anyone who could help identify the person in CCTV footage released yesterday or anyone fitting their description.

“The person depicted in the footage clearly comes to the police station and lobbed an object over the gate,” Det Insp Fox said.

“It landed on some diesel tanks. It could have had some really bad effects.”

Det Insp Fox said police had “identified some suspects” and “spoken to a couple of people” but were asking for public assistance to identify further suspects.

He said the possibility that the offender may be part of an organised crime syndicate operating in Tasmania has not been ruled out and Tasmania Police was “committed to finding out who this person is”.

Anyone with information that would assist police to identify this person is asked to phone Launceston CIB on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.
