A GEILSTON BAY man has been charged with common assault following a nightclub brawl with Victorian man Jarrod Davies, who was found dead in the River Derwent on Tuesday.

Mr Davies, a 27-year-old visitor from South Gippsland, was last seen heading towards Elizabeth Street Pier after leaving the Observatory Bar on Hobart’s waterfront about 1am on Sunday.

His body was later found by police divers about 30m south of Elizabeth Street Pier on Tuesday afternoon.

Mr Davies was visiting Tasmania with his father for a marine-related course. His last known contact was a phone call to his dad about 1.20am on Sunday.

Police investigations on Mr Davies’ movements on the night of his disappearance found he was involved in an altercation with the 28-year-old Geilston Bay man at the Franklin Wharf club. The man is charged to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court in March.

Police inquiries show there is a separation between the events surrounding the alleged assault and Mr Davies’ last known movements.

It is not suggested the 28-year-old man had any involvement in Mr Davies’ death.

A report is being prepared for the coroner.
