Police would not reveal any details but confirmed Mr Davies made a final phone call to his dad – who had returned to their central Hobart hotel earlier in the evening – about 1.20am on Sunday.

“After a few hours the dad realised ‘hang on, he’s not coming home’,” Acting Inspector Darren Latham said.

Mr Davies had been working as a diving instructor in Fiji since June 2018, according to social media.

Diving videos and photos with the hashtag #livingthedream appear on his Facebook page.

Acting Inspector Latham said Mr Davies, originally of Leongatha in South Gippsland, was described by his family as “a young man that was fit, healthy and used to the water”.

Foul play has been ruled out but the police investigation will continue to focus on Mr Davies’ movements inside and after leaving the Observatory Bar.
