Australia's domestic violence crisis

A LAUNCESTON woman has described how she was allegedly dragged out of bed by her hair to a garage and assaulted over a 2½-hour period, including being hit with a baseball bat several times.

The jury in the trial of 22-year-old Jake Christopher Morgan, of no fixed address, was the first to be sworn in as trials recommenced in Tasmania on Tuesday after being suspended in March due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Mr Morgan pleaded not guilty to three counts of assault and one count of stealing, but guilty to one count of assault.

The complainant in each charge was his former partner of six months, Chloe Jane Brown.

Crown prosecutor Peter Sheriff said it was alleged that about 3am on April 20 last year, Mr Morgan dragged Ms Brown out of bed by her hair to a garage outside their Kings Meadows home.

The court heard Mr Morgan allegedly assaulted her periodically while in the garage by pushing her against a wall, grabbing her by throat, punching her several times and striking her with a baseball bat several times.

Ms Brown gave evidence on Tuesday, saying her shoulder was dislocated when she was shoved forcefully against a brick wall.

The jury was shown pictures of Ms Brown’s injuries, taken while she was in hospital.

During cross-examination, Mr Morgan’s lawyer Evan Hughes suggested Ms Brown sustained the injuries at the hands of another man while she was out, that Mr Morgan did not drag her out of bed, and that Mr Morgan was telling Ms Brown to leave the property while they were in the shed together.

The trial is expected to finish on Wednesday.

Mr Morgan was remanded in custody.
