Tasmania Police say they are following a specific line of inquiry after shocked shoppers witnessed a public punch-up between two women in the carpark of a busy supermarket.

In a statement provided to the Mercury, a police spokeswoman confirmed they were aware of the incident, which occurred Wednesday morning outside Woolworths Mount Street, in Upper Burnie.

“Police were called to the scene about 11.20am Wednesday after reports of a disturbance between two people known to each other,” she said.

“A 41-year-old woman received non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the incident.

“The alleged offender had left the scene before police arrived.

“Police are following a specific of line of inquiry in relation to the alleged assault.

“No charges have been laid at this stage.”

Local woman Selena Pitt said she was queuing to pay for her groceries when her teenage son pointed to the carpark.

“He said to me, ‘Hey mum, look,’ and I said, ‘Nice car,’ and he said, ‘No, the fight’ and that’s when I realised that two females were fighting,” Ms Pitt said.

Ms Pitt said she saw a woman throw a punch then take her victim to ground, where she “kept punching into her”.

“The other female got up and punched her back and at some point she headbutted the other female and a few more punches went on,” Ms Pitt said.

“As they were still fighting, a Woolworths employee asked another employee to call the cops and by the time I paid for my items the fight was over.”
