A YOUNG man has faced court charged with negligently causing the Glenora road death of long-time Mercury delivery driver, John Tscherkaskyj.

On Friday, 19-year-old Kobe Brenden McCauley appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court, charged with causing the death of another person by negligent driving, and causing grievous bodily harm by negligent driving.

The court heard it was Mr McCauley’s first appearance over the matter.

According to court documents, the alleged incident occurred on August 8 last year at Gordon River Road, Glenora.

Police allege Mr McCauley failed to keep left, crossed a solid white line, and failed to keep a proper lookout.

Tasmania Police issued a statement last year claiming a head-on crash occurred about 1.45am on August 8 between two Toyota HiLux vehicles – one travelling east and one travelling west.

The statement said the man driving west died at the scene, while the 18-year-old male driver of the other car, and an 18-year-old female front passenger, were taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

“Preliminary investigations suggest the second vehicle may have crossed to the incorrect side of the road,” police said at the time.

Last year, the Mercury reported the death of 56-year-old Mercury delivery driver John Tscherkaskyj, known among friends as John Custard Jay, had sent shockwaves through his community.

The Goodwood resident and father of 13 children was delivering newspapers on Gordon River Road at the time of his death.

“It’s hard knowing Dad will never walk through the front door with his goofy, toothless smile,” one of Mr Tscherkaskyj’s children said at the time.

A GoFundMe page raised more than $15,000 to help support Mr Tscherkaskyj’s wife and children.

Mr McCauley, who has not yet entered a plea and is on bail, will return to court on June 10.
