UPDATE: A former Anglican priest has pleaded not guilty to historical child sex abuse charges at a Hobart court on Friday.

Louis Daniels made his plea in front of the Hobart Magistrates Court on Friday morning after having spent the night in police custody.

The 74-year-old had been extradited from the Australian Capital Territory and then ordered to remain in custody by a Hobart magistrate just after 7pm on Thursday.

Mr Daniels made a bail application on the Friday morning.

He was granted bail and was asked to reappear in front of a Supreme Court September 5, 2022, with the option to appear via videolink.

Tasmania Police say Hobart detectives arrested the man after a “complex and protracted” investigation into the allegations.

EARLIER: A former Anglican priest faced Hobart Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon over a historical child sexual abuse charge.

Louis Daniels appeared before the magistrate just after 7pm on Thursday one charge of persistent sexual abuse of a child which allegedly took place in the 1980s.

Mr Daniels was a Tasmanian Reverend at the time, but he currently resides in the Australian Capital Territory.

His court appearance was attended by Mr Louis’ brother Steve Daniels from Canberra and his cousin Christopher Arthur from West Hobart.

Mr Daniels applied for bail, but it was denied and he was remanded in custody. Mr Daniels will re-appear in Hobart Magistrates Court at 10am on Friday.

Mr Daniels court appearance comes after Hobart detectives arrested the 74-year-old man in the Australian Capital Territory and extradited him to Tasmania.

Mr Daniels was due to appear in court at 4pm, but two flights from Canberra were delayed causing him to appear in front of the magistrates at 7pm.--
