A young Tasmanian woman has admitted to travelling to her ex-boyfriend’s house after their break-up and bashing him on the front stoop, repeatedly punching him and kicking his legs and waist.

Riverside woman Taleisha Louise Grace, 20, pleaded guilty in Launceston Magistrates Court on Monday to a charge of common assault. A second charge was discontinued by Tasmania Police.

Grace, who is well-known on the equestrian scene, was placed on a 12-month good-behaviour bond with no conviction recorded, in light of her young age and absence of criminal history.

The court heard her victim was Perth man Thomas Geoffrey Oliver, 23, who is the father of her 18-month-old child. The pair had been in a relationship for approximately four years. It ended six months before Grace assaulted him at his Perth home on July 11.

The pair became involved in a dispute via text message over the shared parenting arrangements for their daughter, when Grace drove herself to Mr Oliver’s.

A heated argument commenced, with the defendant screaming, grabbing hold of Mr Oliver and punching him.

She tried to enter the residence but Mr Oliver blocked her, at which point she began kicking him repeatedly to his legs and waist, the court was told.

Mr Oliver’s mother, whose house it was, called police. Grace remained seated in her car out the front until officers arrived and she was arrested. Mr Oliver suffered soreness to his ribs and face as a result of the assault.

Defence lawyer Hannah Goss told the court the parties have since moved past their grievances and were co-parenting without incident currently.

She said her client was in receipt of government benefits but previously had a good work history.

Ms Goss said Grace and Mr Oliver’s relationship was a turbulent one. She alleged it was marred by mutual domestic violence.

On July 2 – nine days before he was assaulted – Tasmania Police allege Mr Oliver destroyed property belonging to Grace. He is alleged to have destroyed a duffel bag, a pillow and a wheel trim.

Mr Oliver has pleaded not guilty to the charge. A hearing into the allegation will occur on March 17 next year.

Magistrate Simon Brown agreed there were extenuating circumstances which led to the assault.

“I accept this is out of character,” Mr Brown told the court.

“Everyone is entitled to make one mistake. You’ve made yours.”
